A Message from Our President
Upcoming Opportunities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So... do I have your attention? Okay, this isn't the kind
of opportunity where your boss walks into your office and
says, "Skeezix, I have an opportunity for you that would
give you some much needed experience and potentially enhance
the direction of your career." (Translation - It's a dirty
job that I don't want to do, so I'm handing it off to you.)
No. These are opportunities to have some fun and tag up
with your EWGA golfing buddies!
Our monthly playday at
Greatwood on May 30th is going to be everything you
want it to be. Seriously. Andrea Gerber is making this
event a sort of "dealer's choice" for everyone. If you want
to play competitively, there will be competition. If you
want to play a scramble, grab three of your golfing buddies
and sign up as a scramble team. Just want to get in 18
holes on a beautiful Saturday at the end of May? You've got
it! Whatever way you want it, you can sign up and play it!
See more details and sign up under "Events."
New Member Orientation at
Greatwood on May 30th!! If you are a member who has
joined since January 1, 2009, the Board wants to buy you
lunch! We are going to meet at Greatwood at 11:00 a.m. for
lunch and a little conversation. Your 2009 Board wants to
meet you and find out what "drove" you to our organization
and how we can best serve you. You will be receiving a
personal invitation separate from this email. Please RSVP
as soon as possible. Join us for lunch then stay and play
with the crew.
CHAPTER CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!! Woo-Hoo!! The
excitement is building.
Deadline for registration is June 6, 2009, and we don't
want you to be left out. What's that? You've never
competed before? Poppy cock!!! Remember when you were a
kid heading to the pool in the summer and shouting, "Last
one in is a rotten egg!!!" Friendly competition, right?
The last one in didn't really turn into a rotten egg,
right? Same thing here. It's all about getting to the pool
and having some fun. (Or in this case, getting out to Black
Horse Golf Course (North Course) and having some fun.)
This is a FLIGHTED competition. If you are a 30 handicap,
you won't be playing against someone with a 2 handicap. (Do
we have any "2" handicaps? Hmmm...) No... you'll be
playing against people who are similar in skill to you. And
you will be competing in the largest amateur competition in
the United States!
Don't want to play an individual competition? Play in the
scramble competition. Be part of a team effort. The rules
and other information for individual AND scramble play are
linked in this newsletter.
Each flight will send TWO people to the semi-finals in
July. (The word "sending" here is a little misleading. The
semi-finals are being held here in Houston... at Black
Horse... on the North Course. Sound familiar?) We will
send one scramble team. (Again, the word "sending...")
June 20th is the date of the Championship, but we've gotta
have your registration by June 6th. (This is a Headquarters
thing. I can't change the deadlines.) Click on the various
links throughout the newsletter for rules, registration, and
other information.
FUN PLAY at the Chapter
Championship! Okay... so I haven't convinced you
that you're ready for competition. Our regular monthly
playday for the month of June is being held in conjunction
with the Chapter Championship (see below for more
information). There will be separate prizes for fun play,
and you'll have the opportunity to be around the excitement
of the Championship.
We are in the process of adding more clinics to our monthly
opportunities, so keep your eyeballs peeled for those
announcements. Social Event opportunities are going to be
hitting us fast and furious as we get into the summer
months. Get ready for a BIG announcement on May 26th. I
can't give you any details, but you will absolutely be blown
away by the magnitude. (And by "BIG announcement" I mean,
watch the news that evening!)
Okay... I've said too much already. The weather has been
pretty doggoned nice for this time of the year in Houston.
Hope you are out IN it and getting the most OUT of it.
Fairways and Greens!
Peace,
Robin

EWGA Weekly Fun Play at Wildcat Golf Club
EWGA Houston offers weekly play opportunities on
Thursdays and Sundays at either the Lakes course or the
Highlands course. With the beautiful weather last week
a number of EWGA ladies came out for a friendly game of
golf and showed no fear when it came to getting that
ball to fly nicely over the rolling hills of the
Highlands course. The Highlands course is one of the
highest points in the city with spectacular views. For
information about tee times send email to
central.funplay@ewga.org, and our Wildcat league
chair Ms. Jan Cunningham (seen in the photo below
holding the flag) will get you the information you need
to join the fun.

Lower
Your Score! Get Ready to Compete!
We have one opportunity left scheduled
for you to work on your game.
Jim Hardy (yes - Elizabeth's husband) has agreed to do
three clinics for us at a GREAT price and the chapter is
adding to the bargain.
Jim Hardy is the PGA Director of Instruction at
Hearthstone Country Club in Houston. Each clinic will be
at this location. Jim has quoted us a fee of $15 per
member and the Houston EWGA will pay ˝ o f the fee for
each member. That's right your net cost to lower your
score is $7.50 per clinic. Non-members may attend for
$20 per person per clinic.
Register now to participate in one or all of the
following clinics by contacting Jill at
Education@ewga.org. The clinics will be limited to
18. Jim will have assistants to keep the student to
teacher ratio at 6:1.
June 3, 2009 at 6pm
Tournament Prep: This clinic is a basics and refresher
course in putting, short game and full swing. You will
also learn a good practice routine to go through in the
final days before a tournament to ensure that you peak
on tournament day. It will also cover sound advice for
the do's and don'ts before a tournament to give your
best chance to play at your best.

We got such great feedback on the clinic we sponsored
for our newest members that we went back to Lynn Parker
and asked for a second clinic. So, on
June 13 at Jersey
Meadows Golf Course, 10:30-11:30, Lynn will
conduct a Swing Principles clinic. The clinic is
designed for beginners but if you are an experienced
golfer feeling like the swing has lost its zing, you may
want to attend. The clinic is limited to the first 12
that register and will cost $5/person.
Remember, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that
swing.
Please register by contacting me at
education@ewga.org. Please use 'Swing Clinic' in the
subject line of your email.
Important Note: If you want to attend a clinic and try
to notify me within 48 hours or less of the clinic, I
may not be able to respond quickly enough. If this
occurs, please contact the PGA/LPGA pro or other party
that is conducting clinic to see if there is still room.
They will have received a registration update from me
and will be able to tell you if there is room for you to
attend.
Additionally, if we receive an overwhelming response to
a particular clinic, we will try to book a second date.
We don't want anyone to miss an opportunity to learn
more about golf.
See you on the green,
Jill

Team Up to Play in The
McGladrey Team Championship
Interested in gaining more competitive golf experience?
The McGladrey Team Championship is fast becoming a very
popular event for amateur golfers across the nation. This
unique event brings together amateur golfers and PGA
Professionals for a one-of-a-kind grassroots competition.
Over the last two years, The McGladrey Team Championship
field has had only 5% female participation. We challenge
EWGA members to change this statistic in 2009! Don't miss
this great opportunity to team up with other EWGA members
and gain competitive golf experience.
There are three stages to the competition: Local Qualifying
Events, Section Championships and the National
Championship. Teams of three compete in Local Qualifying
Events held now through September at PGA facilities across
the country. Find a listing of host facilities by visiting
PGA.com/teamchampionship. Winning teams from Local
Qualifying Events are joined by a PGA Professional at the 41
PGA Section Championships. The section winners advance on to
the National Championship played at famed Pinehurst Resort
in North Carolina , October 26-28, 2009 on courses Nos. 2, 4
and 8.
Please support our Partner, The PGA of America, and sign-up
to compete in this dynamic event. For more information and
to register today visit PGA.com/teamchampionship or contact
your local PGA Professional. Please remember entry forms
must be completed as a team.
With the right team, anything's possible!
