2009 President's
Message

HO-LY SMOKES!!! Where has the year gone??!!!! (Our mothers warned us
that this would happen...) I sort of feel like
rambling today, so please bear with me.
By the time you read this, Chapter
Championship will be in the history books.
I am writing this before I leave town this weekend, so I can't
specifically congratulate any of the winners. (I'm psychotic... not
psychic...)
But the winners weren't just the ladies who took home the trophies. It
takes a bit of courage to sign up and show up for a championship
tournament of this magnitude. To all of you who
took on the challenge: CONGRATULATIONS! You are
all winners.
-------------------------------------------
So... what's next? Let's see, we have a monthly playday on July 11th
(details
here - I'm signing up... are YOU?) and
Lone Star Cup tryouts are ongoing. (I was
there for the first one. Heat
index was something like 109 degrees!!!
Which by the way, was what I shot.) There were
some really great matches that went right down to the last hole.
These ladies are seriously competitive!
--------------------------------------------
Have you heard about the S.W.I.N.G. program? Successful Women Influencing
New Golfers. It is a way for us to match up experienced golfers with
new golfers to help guide them through those first
nervous rounds of golf or encourage them to get
out to that first clinic. Mentors are not expected
to TEACH golf. In fact, it's kind of discouraged. (How many of you
have your PGA Professional Teaching card?) It is
more of an opportunity to
encourage participation, mentor through some of the
rules of golf, and
offer up tips for things like pace of play or etiquette on the green.
(Leave your extra clubs between the hole and the cart so you have to
trip over them on the way back to the cart. Only
took me two years and four lost clubs to figure
that one out!)
If you are interested in being a mentor, OR if you are interested in being
a mentee, send an email to Jill McClenny at
education@ewga.org.
I have two mentees who are relatively new
members! (Heaven help them!)
--------------------------------------------
I got a call a couple of weeks ago from our Chapter Development specialist.
She said, "WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU ALL DOING IN HOUSTON??!!" I was
immediately defensive. "What do you mean? What were we SUPPOSED to
have done? Did anybody get hurt? What are you
talking about? It wasn't my fault!!!!!"
Turns out that she was seriously inquiring about our new members. Seems
that we are setting some kind of record with how many new members
have joined us this year. She was wondering what
we were doing... how we were hog-tying and
dragging so many new people into the fold. (Whew! I thought
I was in trouble... again... as usual...) It didn't take long to
explain. The Board... we're doing our part
by listening to our members. You're
doing your part by giving us feedback... VALUABLE feedback. The Board -
YOUR Board - doing our best to respond.
Seems that you like doing business this way, and it seems that you are
spreading the word. I told the Board at our very first meeting that
I don't really care about membership numbers. If
we do the right things for the right reasons to
serve the membership, the numbers would take care of
themselves.
And for the record, we STILL don't care about the numbers. We care about
YOU. Keep those cards and letters coming in folks. We want to hear
from you. This is your Chapter. Tell us how to
tailor it to fit your needs.
Fairways & Greens!
Peace,
Robin
